Who was Dante Alighieri?

Durante degli Alighieri, mononymously referred to as Dante (IT: /’dante/UK: /ˈdænti/US: /ˈdɑːnteɪ/; 1265–1321), was an Italian poet, prose writer, literary theorist, moral philosopher, and political thinker. He is best known for the monumental epic poem La commedia, later named La divina commedia(The Divine Comedy). His Divine Comedy, originally called Commedia and later called Divina by Boccaccio, is considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of world literature.[1]

In Italy he is known as il Sommo Poeta (“the Supreme Poet”) or just il Poeta. Dante, Petrarch, and Boccaccio are also known as “the three fountains” or “the three crowns”. Dante is also called the “Father of the Italian language”.

Dante was born in FlorenceItaly. The exact date of Dante’s birth is not known, although it is generally believed to be around 1265. This can be deduced from autobiographic allusions in La Divina Commedia, “the Inferno” (Halfway through the journey we are living, implying that Dante was around 35 years old, as the average lifespan according to the Bible (Psalms 89:10, Vulgate) is 70 years; and as the imaginary travel took place in 1300, Dante must have been born around 1265). Some verses of the Paradiso section of the Divine Comedy also provide a possible clue that he was born under the sign ofGemini: “As I revolved with the eternal twins, I saw revealed from hills to river outlets, the threshing-floor that makes us so ferocious” (XXII 151-154). In 1265 the Sun was in Gemini approximately during the period 11 May to 11 June.[2]

Dante claimed that his family descended from the ancient Romans (Inferno, XV, 76), but the earliest relative he could mention by name was Cacciaguida degli Elisei (Paradiso, XV, 135), of no earlier than about 1100. Dante’s father, Alaghiero[3] or Alighiero di Bellincione, was a White Guelph who suffered no reprisals after the Ghibellines won theBattle of Montaperti in the middle of the 13th century. This suggests that Alighiero or his family enjoyed some protective prestige and status, although some suggest that the politically inactive Alighiero was of such low standing that he was not considered worth exiling.

Dante’s family had loyalties to the Guelphs, a political alliance that supported the Papacy and which was involved in complex opposition to the Ghibellines, who were backed by the Holy Roman Emperor. The poet’s mother was Bella, likely a member of the Abati family[3]. She died when Dante was not yet ten years old, and Alighiero soon married again, to Lapa di Chiarissimo Cialuffi. It is uncertain whether he really married her, as widowers had social limitations in these matters, but this woman definitely bore two children, Dante’s half-brother Francesco and half-sister Tana (Gaetana). When Dante was 12, he was promised in marriage to Gemma di Manetto Donati, daughter of Manetto Donati, member of the powerful Donati family[3]. Contracting marriages at this early age was quite common and involved a formal ceremony, including contracts signed before a notary. Dante had by this time fallen in love with another, Beatrice Portinari (known also as Bice), whom he first met when he was nine years old. Years after his marriage to Gemma, he claims to have met Beatrice again; although he wrote several sonnets to Beatrice, he never mentioned his wife Gemma in any of his poems. The exact date of his marriage is not known: the only certain information is that, before his exile in 1301 Dante had already three sons (Pietro, Iacopo and Antonia)[3].

Dante fought with the Guelph cavalry at the Battle of Campaldino (June 11, 1289). This victory brought forth a reformation of the Florentine constitution. To take any part in public life, one had to be enrolled in one of the city’s many commercial or artisan guilds, so Dante entered the guild of physicians and apothecaries. In the following years, his name is occasionally found recorded as speaking or voting in the various councils of the republic. A substantial portion of minutes from such meetings from 1298-1300 were lost during World War II, however, and consequently the true extent of Dante’s participation in the city’s councils is somewhat uncertain.

Dante had several children with Gemma. As often happens with significant figures, many people subsequently claimed to be Dante’s offspring; however, it is likely that Jacopo, Pietro, Giovanni and Antonia were truly his children. Antonia later became a nun with the name of Sister Beatrice.

Ancient Aliens on the History Channel discuss Enoch

Ancient Aliens is an American television series that premiered on April 20, 2010 on the History channel. Produced by Prometheus Entertainment, the tv show discusses theories of ancient astronauts and suggest  historical books, archaeology and local legends contain evidence of past human-extraterrestrial contact and communication. The show has been criticized for presenting disputed pseudo science.

The shows really dig deep in the history of your civilization and our existence. It’s a great resource of knowledge for those who are interested in paranormal, aliens and a little more than just a history that you’re being told in schools. The show is filled with true facts, actual places and true events in human history. Really opens your mind for new possibilities and shapes of history.

One of the books mentioned frequently in the show is known as the Book of Enoch. Despite the brief descriptions of him, Enoch is one of the main two focal points for much of the 1st millennium BC Jewish mysticism, notably in the Book of Enoch. Additionally, Enoch is important in some Christian denominations: He is commemorated as one of the Holy Forefathers in the Calendar of Saints of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Catholic Church on July 26.

If you would like to read more about Enoch and his adventures we offer The first two books on the Android Market.

AS SEEN ON HISTORY CHANNEL’S ANCIENT ALIENS!!

The Book of Enoch (also 1 Enoch[1]) is an ancient Jewish religious work, traditionally ascribed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. It is not part of the biblical canon as used by Jews, apart from Beta Israel. It is regarded as canonical by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and Eritrean Orthodox Church, but no other Christian group.
Western scholars believe that its older sections (mainly in the Book of the Watchers) date from about 300 BC, and the latest part (Book of Parables) probably was composed at the end of the 1st century BC.[2]

It is wholly extant only in the Ge’ez language, with Aramaic fragments from the Dead Sea Scrolls and a few Greek and Latin fragments. There is no consensus among scholars about the original language: some propose Aramaic, others Hebrew, while the probable thesis, according to E. Isaac, is that 1 Enoch, like Daniel, was composed partially in Aramaic and partially in Hebrew.[3]:6 Ethiopian scholars generally hold that Ge’ez is the language of the original from which the Greek and Aramaic copies were made, pointing out that it is the only language in which the complete text has yet been found.[4]

A short section of 1 Enoch (1 En 1:9) is quoted in the New Testament (Letter of Jude 1:14-15), and is there attributed to “Enoch the Seventh from Adam” (1 En 60:8). It is argued that all the writers of the New Testament were familiar with it and were influenced by it in thought and diction.

How important is Search Engine Optimization for your Business?

Every company knows that search engine optimization is a vital piece in any online marketing strategy, but is SEO more important than paid search? A new study published by User Centric, a user experience research firm, demonstrates just how valuable the organic listings can be over the paid listings. The study was aimed at eye-tracking of data searchers and analyzing that persons experience as they perform a search query. The participants were given specific search terms and were told to search for them on Google and Bing.

Their findings were pretty interesting. 100% of the users viewed the organic listings versus 91% viewing the paid. The study actually showed that the majority of search users overlooked the paid ads and went directly to the organics. Don’t get me wrong, this post is about the importance of SEO, but I am sure that the results vary depending on the type of search query and I just want to throw that out there.

So what does this all mean for you? Search consumers are getting saturated with paid ads and are starting to overlook them. This happened with display/banner ads several years back as you are probably aware of. The click through rates on those types of ads started to drop intensely as people started ignoring them out of their internet experience. If this is the case that means that search users place a higher level of trust in the unpaid organic listings. If you don’t have very high search placements naturally, you should probably focus more of your efforts now before the paid traffic starts to level off or decrease. In the long term, search engine optimization is far more cost effective as the only fees that you would be paying would be the continued maintenance of your SEO efforts. Make sure you choose a White Hat SEO firm to manage your campaign or hire knowledgeable people. If they don’t know what they are doing, they could get you very little results or even worse, canned.

The kindle fire introduces potentially 3 million new customers to BCI products!

The tablet wars are really getting started!
Ending the speculation, Amazon on introduced not 1, not 2, but 4 brand new Kindle devices. The company is trying to dominate the e-reader market with an starting $79 Kindle, and to do what many tech business have failed at: building a color tablet device at a reasonable price that can compete with Apple’s wildly successful iPad. Kindle Fire, Full Color 7″ Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi is that saving grace.
It’s designed mainly as a media consumption device rather than a touch computer and it undercuts Apple’s iPad by hundreds of dollars—$199 compared to $500 for an iPad. It will go on sale November 15.

From Androids to Apples, from Samsung, RIM and more, 2011 will be the year of the tablet.

The Amazon Kindle Fire, a $199 tablet PC based on the Android OS that some say could be a serious threat to the Apple iPad Survival.

The Kindle Fire has a 7-inch color display, weighs just 14.6 ounces, and has a color touch screen. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos stressed the device’s ability to play video from Amazon’s streaming service, play MP3’s from the Amazon store, and load Websites more swiftly by taking advantage of Amazon’s cloud services.

Online storage for movies, books, and music will be free for Kindle Fire owners, extending storage beyond the device’s built-in 8GB of memory. Like current Kindle books, movies will also sync between devices wirelessly so that user can pick up watching a movie from where they left off on another device, such a set-top box like the Roku.

Amazon makes several devices that include 3G cellular connections, but the initial version of the Fire will be Wi-Fi only.

While the Fire is smaller than the iPad with its 10-inch screen and it doesn’t have a camera, the tablet is much lighter so that it can be comfortably held in one hand. And it supports all the popular video formats, including Adobe’s Flash—something Apple refuses to do. Taking another jab at Apple, Bezos showed one slide of an Apple USB cable, promising that the Kindle Fire would do away with the cords and would update wirelessly. The Fire uses a dual-core processor and the latest version of Google Android software and looked zippy in hands-on demonstrations. Apps will also be available for the device, but Amazon is clearly focused on tying its own services into the tablet.

“This is an end-to-end service,” Bezos emphasized in his presentation in New York City. He touted not only the book store but the Amazon Prime service, which offers streaming movies and programs for an annual $79 subscription. So far, Amazon has lined up some big content providers, including Fox for movies, but still lacks the catalog depth of competing Netflix. According to Amazon, it is still interested in having a Netflix app on the Kindle Fire, as well as other popular competing services, such as Pandora. Such apps are not available yet, however.

The other three Kindles that Amazon introduced today are based on the black-and-white E Ink displays. The Kindle Touch 3G uses infrared senors for touch, and thus eliminates the tiny keypad below the screen. It includes free wireless 3G data service, which will work in over 100 countries, for just $149. The Kindle Touch model is identical but lacks the free 3G service, relying on Wi-Fi instead, for just $99.
Finally, the new Kindle e-reader does away with the touch and 3G features, using Wi-Fi and a directional pad instead—it will costs just $79 and is available now.

“We’re going to sell many millions of these,” Bezos beamed.

Amazon is clearly planning to use the popularity of its Kindles to break into other markets. Not only is streaming video a focus of the Kindle Fire, but Amazon plans to push its AmazonLocal deals across all the devices. The service offers special deals on everything from concert tickets to dancing lessons, taking aim at competing Groupon, which is getting media coverage due to its forthcoming IPO

While Amazon’s Kindle announcements today could set off a price war with Barnes & Noble and its color Nook, it’s questionable whether Apple will respond by lowering the price of its iPad or introduce newer models before the end of the year.
One thing is certain: At these prices Amazon is bound to light up the e-reader and tablet markets this fall.
This will allow our products like Book Of Shadows Amazon to prosper.
Check out the kindle fire commercial!

We at BCI are definitively excited about the kindle fire release.
